Early
settlers of the Youghiogheny Valley were introduced to the liberal faith
of Universalism by an itinerant minister, and on June 9, 1860, in Port
Royal, the first Universalist Church in southwestern Pennsylvania was
organized. In 1872, a red brick church was erected; however, the operation of coke ovens nearby rendered the building unfit for use as a house of worship. In1888, the present church was built on land donated by George Smith. The bell, which is still functional, was donated by Mr. Thomas of Philadelphia; for many years, the church was known as the Thomas Universalist Church. In 1961, with the merger of the Universalists with the Unitarians, the congregation became the Thomas Unitarian Universalist Church. It adopted its present name, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Smithton, in 2000. |
