News Items

From the Frontlines, Behind the Scenes
Rev. Rebecca Booher

Here's a bit of a roundup of doings throughout the UUA, OMD, and around our local area. Make sure to check the bulletin board for info & updates throughout the month!

Sat. Oct.11-"Burning the Future: Coal in America." Sponsored by the Mountain Watershed Association and the Center for Coalfield Justice, this Pittsburgh event is part of a nationwide screening of this important film. The Sierra Club says "This compelling and timely film burns through the 'clean coal' rhetoric of industry front groups, showing the harsh truth of the coal story." (I have the film... it's excellent, and worth the trip to the "Big City" to see it and have a Q&A with the writer/director!) www.mtwatershed.com. Flier on the b.b.

Sat. Oct.18-"Big Ideas for Small Congregations" workshop with Ellen Germann-Melosh, co-author of book by the same name and former District Exec. of OMD. UU Fellowship of Wayne County, Wooster OH. See flier for more details.

Throughout October and into Nov. - "Tents of Hope " project.  The UUA and UUSC are backing this nationwide effort to call awareness to the ongoing crisis in Darfur, Sudan. We could buy one, or build one, and put it in our church yard to create community discussion. This "could" be a terrific project to increase our visibility! See www.tentsofhope.org, or www.uusc.org/tentsof hope, and/or check out the flier.

UUCS Services
Services begin at 11 a.m. and are followed by coffee hour and social/discussion time.

October 5-Leo Nagorski "Thoughts On Change"
Everyone is talking about change these days, whether it's politics or the environment. Perhaps, we would do well to look at change itself. What does it mean? Is it an end in itself? How critical should we be of those promising change?

October 11-Rebecca Booher "Pacifists, Pragmatists, and Prophets: Which are you? Which are we?"
How can a group as diverse as we Unitarian Universalists come to agreement on the issue of peacemaking? Our 2006-2010 Study/Action Issue, Peacemaking, has led to both controversy and creative ways of dealing with this timely topic. We'll review some of the issues and, perhaps, come up with our own plan to deal with them.

October 18-Jim Galik "Can You Spare Some Change?"
As the Presidential Election draws near, candidates tell us that they will bring about significant change, and to the extent that things change for the better. The problem with change is that it is so difficult, and one of the primary reasons that change is so difficult lies in how we approach the issue. We may want others to change, and we may want the world to change, but we tend to resist changing ourselves, and some say that change must start from within. Today's discussion about change will include consideration of some major world changes, including the struggle for independence in India in the first half of the 20th century, and the American civil rights movement of the 1950's and 1960's. It will also include consideration of a more personal example.

Bernie Brown October 26-"Miracles"
Following my point #4 of the master outline page distributed last July 27 on a non-literal, non-fundamentalist reading of parts of the Bible, we will explore understanding miracles: Are they physical or are they spiritual changes? Why are there religious accounts of miracles? Are they exaggerations? metaphors? In what way are biblical miracles "true"? So does God suspend the laws of nature? Is that even possible for God? (No.) What are the (moral) miracles in my own life?
